Blacks Canyon Ranch, a working cattle ranch located 290 miles northeast
of Sacramento, California, consists of 86,000± acres including
77,000± acres in the Modoc National Forest and the area known as
the Devil’s Garden. The ranch is located just north of the rural
community of Canby, and is 25 miles from Alturas, the County Seat of
Modoc County.
With incredible valley and mountain views, irrigated lands, streams,
waterfalls and an abundance of wildlife the ranch offers a very private
and secluded piece of the world. Blacks Canyon starts just north
of Canby, cutting north-northwest into the Devil's Garden plateau for
some 6 miles of green meadows, creeks, and irrigation ponds. Up
the canyon hillsides the meadows give way to bunchgrasses. From
there, sage and juniper give way to ponderosa pines and black oak
groves that lead up to the spectacular cap rock formations that
surround the entire 30-mile canyon rim.

property, with full water rights from Williams and Duncan
Reservoirs. Not only is Blacks Canyon a self-sufficient 1,200
cow/calf pairs ranch, it also offers some of the best game hunting and
fishing in the West.
Blacks Canyon Ranch owns all of the private canyon land in fee
title, except for the Williams Homestead portion, which is still
occupied by the original "good neighbor" family. The ranch offers
a very private and secluded piece of California and despite the
appearance of isolation when you are on the ranch, it is only 4 miles
from the rural community of Canby and 25 miles from Alturas, the County
Seat of Modoc County. Aspen and cottonwoods inundate the many
spring strata. Birdsong, roaring waterfalls and Shasta and Warner
Mountain views make it hard to get any work done.
The ranch includes two private US Forest Service allotments
encompassing 77,000± acres. The permits lie just out the
back gate of the ranch and are considered the best allotments in the
Devil's Garden Plateau as they contain large marshes with surrounding
wet meadows. The permits allow 1,200cow/calf pairs running from
May to October, a total of 5,500 AUMs+.
The ranch has approximately 1,250 acres of irrigated ground: 600 acres
of flood-irrigated meadows, 400 acres of sub-irrigated land and two
center pivots covering 250 acres. A good annual cutting yields
approximately 2,000 tons of alfalfa and grass hay per year. The
water used for irrigation flows primarily from Duncan and Williams
Reservoirs, which are granted to Blacks Canyon Ranch by the federal
government. These reservoirs are located above the Ranch and
gravity flow the entire length of Blacks Canyon, into storage ponds and
then flows into the Pit River. The ranch has senior water rights
above all others. The power for the pumps for the two center
pivots is provided by Surprise Valley Electric (SVE), the most
economical electricity provider in the Pacific Northwest.
Improvements on the ranch include:
Hay Barns: Five large hay barns are located around the ranch for easy
access and storage near feeding areas.
The Headquarters has a large, multi-use barn; working corrals; covered
cattle scales; covered hydraulic squeeze chute; loading chute that is
ideally situated for easy side and rear loading; a 30' x 70' steel shop
with concrete floor; and additional miscellaneous out-buildings.
The Main House, standing three stories, is located at The Headquarters
consists of 7,000± square feet, 8 bedrooms, 7 bathrooms, a
formal dining room, in-kitchen dining area, and a spacious,
state-of-the-art kitchen that is capable of providing meals for the
entire ranch crew or an intimate gourmet meal. A covered patio,
for eating outside in the summer, is adjacent to the kitchen. The
walk-in refrigerator and walk-in freezer provide plenty of storage to
support the ranch lifestyle.
The Manager's Residence is a comfortable, newly-restored residence
consisting of 1,300 square feet and has 2 bedrooms and one full
bathroom.
An Apartment is located in the 30' x 70' steel shop at the
Headquarters. New and modern, it offers all of the conveniences
for the modern-day buckaroo.
The Ranch Office is newly-restored and includes a kitchen, bathroom and
high-speed internet access for the ranch staff.

From Sacramento Area (approx 5 hours):
Take I-5 North towards Redding (approx 2.5 hours). Take the Hwy
299 east (Exit #680) exit towards Burney/Alturas. Continue on Hwy
299 for approximately 120 miles until you arrive in Canby. In
Canby, turn left (due north) onto Blacks Canyon Rd./County Road 82 and
continue for 4 miles to the Headquarters
From Reno, NV, Area (approx. 3.5 hours):
Take Hwy 395 North towards Susanville and continue on Hwy 395 aprrox
175 miles until you arrive in Alturas (approx 3 hours). In
Alturas turn left (west) onto Hwy 299 and drive approx 20 miles to
Canby. In Canby, turn right (due north) onto Blacks Canyon
Rd./County Road 82 and continue 4 miles to the Headquarters.
